Pimpage for The 10 Biggest Gaming Franchises article

I wrote my piece on Final Fantasy for this article quite a while ago, in fact now I’ve checked my files, it was the end of May. But here it is in all its glory.

Final Fantasy: one of the biggest gaming franchises?

I don’t like my piece. It was the first piece I wrote after my Dad died and I felt very out of the game. Plus looking at it now, as is usual with group pieces, I look at everyone else’s and they seem so much more appropriately written!
Of course there is the chance that this may all be down to me being a perfectionist.

It’s definitely interesting to see what people have put, but I most certainly do not agree with that list.

I can’t knock the inclusions of Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Zelda or Mario, though you could argue the identity of Mario has been so lost now that it shouldn’t be included.

I’m disappointed that something like Quake wasn’t included, especially when you could say the first was so crucially important to fully 3D FPS (you couldn’t aim in Doom), the second was the highest rated game of its time and the third one, albeit alongside Unreal Tournament, started the whole trend of Arena deathmatch games. Then there is what Quake, Quakeworld, Quake 2 and Quake 3 did for Multiplayer.

Call of Duty made it in on the strength of 3 games (1, 2 and 4), yet Half-Life missed out despite being widely acknowledged as one of, if not the most important game of all time, we all know how other games have been affected by its stylings and although I didn’t like Half-Life 2, I couldn’t doubt the impact it has also made, especially when you think of its online aspects – Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.

Other titles which would have me defending their inclusion would be Max Payne 1 and 2, Project Gotham Racing 1, 2, 3 and 4 (as well as Metropolis Street Racer) and possibly Halo, the most important online console game of all time.

I was also very glad to see Football Manager in the list.
