Phantasy Star's strength has, so far as I can make out, always been its gameplay rather than its story. I've only played Phantasy Star 1 and Phantasy Star Online 1, 2 and Blue Burst, along with a tiny bit of 2. They've never struck me as being particularly story-heavy - particularly PSO. Gameplay-wise, though, they've always been solid and a little different from the Final Fantasies and equivalents. Never a series I've really got that into though - I keep meaning to try, though, as the Sega Mega Drive Collection I have for 360 has all four of the original Master System/Mega Drive games included.
