Following on from yesterday’s entry, here’s the second part of the 30-Day Gamer Challenge. Don’t forget to read Eddie Inzauto’s answers too. It makes for great reading.
A game that you wish more people would’ve played
Recettear, as I’ve mentioned previously. It’s a great little game. Clever concept all round and very satisfying. You need to purchase it. It’s not even expensive.
A game you are proud to have beaten
I’m fairly average at games despite having played them for over 20 years, so I’ve not really got any great gaming accomplishments. When it comes to games I’m proud of having beaten, nothing really stands out. One day I desperately hope to finally complete Lords of Midnight. I’ve been trying for nearly 20 years so I’ll be bloody proud when I do. For now though, I honestly don’t know. Maybe 100%ing Final Fantasy VII? As in beating all the weapons, getting everything possible sort of thing.
Favourite game based on a movie/book/comic etc.
Batman: Arkham Asylum. It’s a no brainer. Fantastic game. I completed it twice over a brief period of time and I was still keen for more. It inspired me to read the graphic novels although I’ve still only managed to read relative few thanks to them being so pricey. I’ve got an urge to go play it again now…must be a good game eh?
Favourite stress-relieving game
These days I don’t tend to return to games as often as I could. Lately though, the stress relieving privilege has gone to The Sims 3. It’s just very easy to drop in and out of. Nothing is too fast paced and although it can get hectic sometimes, it’s still quite soothing to play.
A game you wish you could play, but suck at
Quite a lot of multiplayer games. I used to be not bad at Counterstrike thanks to a lot of practice, it was a similar tale with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I’m out of practice now though and it becomes a vicious circle. Because I’m no good, it’s less fun so I don’t play it. Because I don’t play it, I’m crap and so on. I bought Halo Reach last week so I’ll have to give that a try. I’ve promised a few friends that I’d play it anyway.
The game you most regret not playing yet
Demon’s Souls. I’ve borrowed it from a friend but I haven’t had a chance yet. I really want to get a chance to play it before I sum up my GOTYs for Resolution but time is fast running out. I fear its difficulty level will scare me off though.
The game that disappointed you the most
Final Fantasy VIII. Not because it’s a bad game, it’s actually quite good. No, it’s because naive, silly 15 year old me hyped it up far too much. I adored Final Fantasy VII so, so much. Final Fantasy VIII didn’t stand a chance really. I was immensely disappointed. It was the first game that I ever pre-ordered too. I remember going to the store (Future Zone or Electronics Boutique – can’t remember which) then going home and sitting in the optimum position in my room for the TV screen, with a bottle of Fanta by my side. The opening FMV was amazing…..after that I was disappointed. No materia system? Irritating Squall? NOOOOOOO. Bring back Final Fantasy VII. Fortunately over the years, I learnt to love it. It’s a good game, it’s just not as good as Final Fantasy VII.
A game you can beat everyone else at
As previously mentioned, I’m quite average at games. I don’t tend to have any problems with RPGs but you can’t really be competitive with them. In which case it has to be Goldeneye. I’m still pretty good at Goldeneye. At a Nintendo press event in the Summer, I picked it up after years of not playing it, and won convincingly every time. I played it online the other day and I was still pretty good. It’s nice to be good at a FPS again at last.
The game that captivated you the quickest
BioShock. I wasn’t planning on buying it. At the time I didn’t think it looked like my kind of thing at all. I watched DaveyPitch play the demo though and I was hooked. I bought it as soon as it came out and subsequently adored it. Ever play a game that once you finish it, you feel a teensy bit empty? Like you’re not quite sure what to do with your spare time now? It was that kind of game for me.
A game that makes you want to stop playing video games
I honestly can’t think of any. Even the bad games don’t make me feel that way. I enjoy gaming too much for that.
The game that scared you the most
Condemned. Those sodding mannequins. I used to be such a wimp with scary games but not any more. However, Condemned still scares me. Have a look at this article where I mentioned my fear. Great game but aaaaaaargh.
The funniest game you’ve played
I don’t really play games to laugh. I stick to films for that. I think it’d have to be a Sam & Max game though. Love some of the one liners that come from those games. Also, Marvel Superhero Squad has actually made me laugh a few times too. Some really cheesy jokes there.
A game world you wish you could live in
Rapture! Heh no, not Rapture. The world of Kinectimals I think. It seems like a wonderfully cheery and happy place to live. Plus there are countless cuddly big cats to play with. Yay! Seriously though, I wouldn’t really choose to live in any game world. They all tend to be a bit of a mess or lacking in some way.
The game you found most exciting
Split/Second. It’s ridiculously frantic but so very exciting too. In terms of story driven games though it has to be Uncharted 2. Every time I felt the action slow, it would up the ante and turn into another blockbuster Indiana Jones type scenario.
Your ‘Greatest Game of All Time’
Final Fantasy VII. Predictable for those who know me. I love everything about it. It’s further helped by the fact that it came out at just the right time in my life. A time when I had loads of free time and was clearly quite impressionable. It’s the game that turned gaming from something I did when I had the spare time to something that I made spare time for.
