The end of the year is fast approaching which means I need to start pondering what constitutes my Game of the Year.

I’ve played many games that I’ve really enjoyed, but Game of the Year should be rather special. I’m a bit stumped really.

In terms of top fives, I can think of some that might feature. Games like Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain (yes I know but I loved it), Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII, maybe even Dragon Quest IX or The Sims 3. None of these feel like games that deserve to be my game of the year though – the game that’s better than anything else I’ve seen this year.

I haven’t played Demon’s Souls yet so that might help the matter. I fully intend on doing so before the year ends though. While I’ve started Deadly Premonition, I haven’t played it enough to be hooked. I can certainly see the appeal, it just hasn’t quite done it for me yet although I’ve no doubt it will eventually. I just need the time to devote to it.

I started thinking about game of the year because of the game I played this evening though. A game that I’d never expect to have been in my top 20, let alone possibly my game of the year. That game? AssBro as I like to call it.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

It hooked me immediately. I was only going to play it for 30 minutes or so, I didn’t expect for it to draw me in having never been able to get on with the first Assassin’s Creed and only recently delving into the second one. It did though. I had to stop after a few hours sadly to go cook dinner. I fully intend on going back tonight though and I’m sure it’ll stop me from sleeping for a good few hours.

It’s a very good game that means I don’t mind missing out on sleep. Suikoden remains the only game that I thought worthy of getting up an hour early, just to get precious minutes with it. However, a select bunch have been worthy of me staying up till the early morning. I suspect Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is one of those.

It’s brilliant so far. Long may it continue!
