I’m skipping favourite documentaries. I have no idea really. Probably a Michael Moore type thing although that’s more entertainment than documentary.
So favourite animation instead.
That one is easy! The Lion King.
As a kid I watched loads of Disney films. One of my Grandmothers would buy me a new Disney video every birthday and Christmas, and Easter too usually. I was a lucky kid.
My two favourites were Aladdin and The Lion King. I was very fond of Beauty and The Beast and The Aristocats though.
The stand out was The Lion King. The lions were ridiculously cute but the story kept me interested too. I know most of the words to the songs still. Even the video game was good! Funnily enough it has a link with my favourite action film too: Alan Rickman plays the baddie!
I watched it countless times. Except for one bit. I had to fast forward past the bit where Simba’s Dad was killed by Scar. Even when I watched it again as a teenager, I had to fast forward. Way too sad otherwise.
I’d happily watch the film again but the DVD is out of print and there’s no Blu-ray version on the horizon. This sucks quite hugely. It’ll come out eventually of course. Disney will charge a ridiculous premium because people will be so desperate for it. I’ll be a sucker and still buy it.
As an aside, when I first watched Toy Story, I was unimpressed. I was an old fashioned kid. I wanted ‘proper’ animation as in hand-drawn stuff, not CGI. There’s still a part of me that would rather that. I still tend to lean towards the old fashioned cartoon style rather than anything else. I guess that’s why I happily received a Tom and Jerry DVD for my birthday!
