Another quiet week but next week looks to buck that trend at last. 🙂
This is definitely a lazy roundup this week as I’ve got work to go to in an hour and once I get in, I won’t want to be writing.

So what have we got this week?

There was the rather fun Future Racer on the iPhone for VideogameUK. Nothing revolutionary but it was fun.

There seems to be a growing number of games on the App Store paying homage to the classic futuristic racer Wipeout and this time round it’s the turn of Assyria Studio’s Future Racer. Focusing on the racing side of things rather than the weaponry demonstrated in Wipeout, Future Racer provides an enjoyable racing experience at a bargain price, even if it is lacking in a few areas.

A complete change of pace subsequently followed with Elven Legacy: Magic on the PC for Resolution. The hardest strategy game ever…..well except for the other Elven Legacy games of course.

I prophesied that Elven Legacy: Magic would reduce grown men to tears if it continued to up the ante as far as difficulty was concerned. I was right. Somebody somewhere also said familiarity breeds contempt, and it certainly rings true when it comes to this game.

Then there was Fallen Earth also on the PC for The Reticule. A fantastic MMO that deserves more attention than it’s liking to get unfortunately.

Fallen Earth is an MMO quite unlike other more mainstream titles of late. This is exactly why more people need to play it. Initially it seems to be just your regular, clunky and drab looking MMO. Actually it is at times, but it’s also so much more than just its looks. We’ve all seen the bleak wastelands and zombie infested future which games seem to adore showing us but it’s the way that Fallen Earth portrays it that makes it so much fun. Persevere through a slightly mundane tutorial section and it doesn’t take long to realise just what is so compelling and unique about this post-apocalyptic MMO.

Finally I wrapped the week up with the fiendishly hard VVVVVV. It’s brilliant though so don’t let the difficulty level put you off. That was for VideogameUK.

In an increasingly shallow world, it’s fantastic to see a game like VVVVVV. It forgoes the things we are so used to now such as fancy graphics and complicated game mechanics, all in favour of a simple premise which works perfectly. It’s not surprising really considering it comes from accomplished indie developer, Terry Cavanagh, who has already impressed with the likes of Don’t Look Back and Pathways. Much like those titles, VVVVVV wouldn’t look out of place on a Commodore 64 or ZX Spectrum but look past its basic exterior and you’ll find a terrifically clever puzzle platformer that is also one of the most challenging games I’ve played in years.

Rather PC orientated week it seems! Should be more varied next week providing the postman actually delivers the things that I’m expecting.
