This feels like a very appropriate question considering I saw Inception today. Funnily enough my answer isn’t Inception (despite it being absolutely brilliant!) but it is another Nolan film: The Prestige.
I’m assuming you’ve sensibly taken note of the entry title and are avoiding this post if you haven’t seen The Prestige yet. I’m assuming you do intend on watching it though, right? You’d better be! It’s a fantastic film which ably demonstrates how well Bale and Jackman can act when provided with a good script. Everyone should watch it. Absolutely everyone, you hear me?
The twist? Ohh the twist. I’ll throw in a few more warnings in case you’re still reading when you shouldn’t be…
Right then. Who’d have thought that Bale’s character had an identical twin eh? Of course it all makes perfect sense once you realise but I certainly didn’t see it coming. Then of course all the minor twists such as Jackman’s clones. It’s completely absurd really yet never ridiculously so. Instead it feels smart and brilliant. A perfect example of excellent writing and how cinema doesn’t have to be aimed at the lowest common denominator all the time.
Even on further viewings, once you know the twist, it’s still excellent as you understand the tangled web it weaves that bit more.
Obviously an honourary mention can also go to Inception.
