I’m on a real retro kick at the moment. Partially I think it’s because there’s nothing new on the near horizon that I’m really excited about. More obviously it’s because I’m hugely looking forward to the launch of the site that I’m Deputy Editor for, B4HD. Thinking about future plans of articles I want to write for is making me desperately want to rebuy far too many old consoles.
About 5 years ago I had a few mint consoles. I bought a brand new, still sealed Dreamcast and a mint condition, spotless Super Nintendo. There was miraculously no sign of yellowing on the SNES and the box even had all the relevant inserts. Then I bought a good condition Sega Saturn. The box was a little tatty but it wasn’t bad at all considering I bought it for a fair price. Alongside a spotless Crystal Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, N64, Playstation 1, DS and Sega Megadrive, it was rather nice. When I sold the Dreamcast, SNES, Saturn and Xbox to fund some things I was a fool. Unfortunately I was a fool in love at the time so it seemed like a good idea. It wasn’t in hindsight but that’ll be why hindsight is a wonderful thing!
I’d love to buy them back one day but currently my finances really don’t permit that. plus it’d take a lot of looking to find other consoles in such good condition. I doubt I’ll ever find a Dreamcast in such great condition again which is particularly galling.
At least I’ve still got the other consoles. Plus there’s the wonders of Steam and GoodOldGames. Just looking at GoodOldGames brings back so many memories. Cannon Fodder and Caesar 3 I’d particularly love to go back to, brilliant games. I’m in dire need of another city building sim that isn’t Civilization or Sim City actually. Much prefer those over more aggressive RTSes.
Currently I’m in the midst of playing Warioland which is a fantastic nostalgia trip. I’ve only got the cartridge now though so now I want to buy a boxed version. Ugh, B4HD could bankrupt me by accident at this rate! It’ll be fun getting there though 😉
